purpose of poster & magazine drafts
|
When creating our poster and magazine, it is beneficial that we use drafting as a method as it can helps us come up with new ideas. It can also show us what went well and what needs improvement. Drafting also allows us to use different horror conventions so that our pieces are typical and similar to other horror magazines and posters.
This page will contain our both drawn and digital poster and magazine drafts, our influences and our final drafts. |

Poster Research
Before starting our poster drafts, we have carried secondary research by watching a YouTube video which states the rising issues of movie posters. This video relates to horror and our drafts as it discusses the major issues in detail in terms of styles, designs and colours. This is useful when creating our drafts as we know what things to avoid. From this video we have gathered the following notes:
- Hand painted covers are very much appreciated as they convey creativity however, this convention will not be used in our drafting as it does not relate to our treatment.
- The use of attention grabbing colours and designs such as outlines of the antagonist have an enigmatic impact on the audience as it is creepy and creates suspension. This is also a very stylish and cool approach, therefore, it would younger people of ages 15-25 which falls into our target audience; thus we would consider using a similar design as it would attract our target audience.
- This video also mentioned the use of the colour wheel and when using colours from the opposite sides of the wheel they compliment each other, however this is typically used in Action movies.
drawn poster drafts
We have based our first draft on the poster shown on the Dark Touch poster, however, we have followed our colour scheme and used ideas from based on our treatment. We liked the idea of the close up of the characters face as it can express emotion well and draw the attention of our target audience. From our treatment, Catherine (Lilys Mother) is possessed by her daughter Lily and kills herself by slitting her own throat. We expressed this idea through our poster draft as it shows Catherine laying on the floor with a slit throat, and we also used green eyes to represent the idea of possession; This signifies that her body has been taken over and the green eyes connote the change in her body. The use of green and white and black fall into our colour scheme, which is significant as it will be recognisable by our audience.
We have also made use of our tagline "Some Secrets Are Better Left Untold" which has been placed at the top of our poster. This is an eye catching convention as its placed right at the top and can be very intriguing for our audience as they are unaware of what the secret is and why it should be kept a secret. Another convention which we have used effectively in this draft is the use of our main title. This is beneficial to make use of as it makes clear to our audience what the movie is called. The fact that we have used a cross as the letter 'T' also hints that our movie is something to do with religion which is common when it comes to supernatural movies.
We have not made use of conventions such as the production name and certification which is significant to use as it provides relevant information to the audience about our movie.

In our second draft we have been inspired by the Click poster. We have followed a similar idea by showing a close up of our character looking at something. This is effective towards the audience as it draws their attention as it remains a mystery of what they're looking at and also expresses their emotions through the type of shot. As expressed through our poster, we attempted to make our character Susan look frightened.
This idea relates to our treatment as Susan (Lilys sister) peeps through the door and witnesses Lily taking part in witchcraft, therefore, we have expressed this in our poster. The fact that Susan has a green eye, represents the glow of the spells and the spell book which is being used by Lily. Furthermore, when our target audience see this, they'll be intrigued to know what she is looking at and why her eye is green.
In this draft, we have placed the title at the top which is unconventional of posters as the title is usually at the bottom, therefore, this probably won't be a convention which we would consider placing in that area. We have also not made use of conventions such as the production name and certification which is significant to use as it provides relevant information to the audience about our movie.

digital poster draFTS
As shown on the left, is our digital poster draft which has been inspired by the poster shown on the right. This idea has inspired our poster draft as it doesn't give too much away about the trailer or the movie, so it keeps the audience wondering which will make them more interested in finding out what the movie is about. The simplistic look was also inspired by the research which we carried out above from the 'WTF Happened to Horror Movie Posters', as the video stated that simple looks with the use of simple colours like black and white but in our case black, white and teal, is significant as it doesn't give too much away but it also stands out and is different from most horror movie posters.
In our idea on the left, we used a sign similarly to our inspired idea on the right. However, the sign we used applies to our trailer as it is a sign typically used in witchcraft which is significant in our trailer as it will be used. We also made use of a tagline across the top of the poster and the title of the movie along with credits at the bottom. Using these conventions are significant as they are typically used with horror movie posters as shown on the right.

As shown on the left, we have followed a very stylish approach by using an outline of a symbolic code which will be used in our trailer and including many other codes inside of it. This has been inspired by the idea on the right as we liked how it stood out, therefore, it will stand out to the audience. Although, the inspired piece of the right is not a horror movie poster, the ides still appealed. The use of outlines and stylish looks was also highlighted in the research carried out above.
The use of a dominant white background and the use of teal dripping makes the crucifix stand out. Although, this is very eye-catching and stylish, it also doesn't give too much away about the film, but it gives an overall idea of what it may be about without even showing any of the cast members.

In this digital draft, we have used the sign of the cross in the middle of the page to represent the theme of religion in our horror movie trailer. This has been inspired by the idea on the right but it has been carried out in a very simplistic approach. This is because we haven't included any floating heads of the characters in our film as it would give too much away, however we have used main dominant colours which will be expressed in our film and also typical conventions of horror movie posters such as a tagline, title and the credits.
drawn magazine drafts
The image on the right has influenced our idea because it expresses the fear of the character in our trailer by the use of the eyes being attention grabbing. This is significant as it relates to our treatment. This is also useful when attracting our target audience as it creates an enigmatic feeling as the audience cannot see the persons face fully, and they looked scared. This is effective as it doesn't give too much away.
The idea on the right has inspired our draft shown on the left due to the positioning and arrangement of the characters. We have also used this idea as it is significant as it relates to our treatment. This is because the theme of our trailer is possession therefore, the character shown in the background represents the person who posses the person in the foreground. We have expressed this idea in our draft be making the person in the background have full pupils of a white colour which suggests that she is possessed.
We have also used a range of different conventions such as a magazine title, cover line and barcode, which has also be used in the image on the right.

digital magazine draft #1
In the image above, shows our first magazine front cover draft. In this image we have used image manipulation of an image found on google images. To create this image we have used photoshop. We used a range of different effects and tools to manipulate this image so it comes across as 'scary'. We placed this image on a indesign layout which we created which included typical magazine conventions such as a main cover line, boosts, barcode etc.
When manipulating the image, we found it was useful to add that special effect on her face and especially her eyes as it expresses the fact that she has been possessed which is significant in relation to our trailer.
Photoshop was also when creating the magazine title.

This magazine cover has inspired our magazine draft in many ways. For example, the dominant image of the inspired piece. This has inspired our magazine draft as the eyes of the character draws you in right away, therefore, we attempted to create this impact on the audience by adding an effect on the eyes using image manipulation. This is significant as it will attract our target audience.
We also used a range of conventions shown above in our draft, such as a main cover line, boosts at the top of the page and the side and the barcode. It is beneficial that we have used these conventions as it makes our draft more like a horror movie magazine.

digital magazine draft #2
In the image above, shows our second magazine front cover draft. We have used indesign and photoshop to create this draft. We have used photoshop when manipulating the images below by merging them together and using effects to make them come across as more scary. We have arranged the images in a specific way to express the idea of one character possessing another. We have used indesign to create the magazine template and to include typical magazine conventions such as boosts, barcode and main cover line etc.
Photoshop was also used when creating the magazine title.

This piece has inspired our draft in many ways. One way it has inspired our idea is by the arrangement of the actors. As shown above, one of the actors are standing behind the other actor, and with photoshop, we have attempted this idea by manipulating two images together. This is effective as it relates to our trailer of possession and the person behind has more control.
The magazine cover has also inspired our idea by the used of conventions and the style of the magazine used. For example, the bottom the magazine is mostly white, whereas the top has some black. We have used this in our draft.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, it is useful that i have carried out these drafts as it enables me to gather the right skills when creating our final magazine and poster drafts. This has also made me experienced in terms of making poster and magazine drafts therefore, the quality of our final one will be high. The fact that i carried out research beforehand is significant as it shows that I've looked at typical conventions of horror posters and magazines therefore, i know how to apply these to our ones.
